Everyday Water-Saving Tips for the Pass

Hot, dry weather is nothing new in the Crowsnest Pass—especially in the summer. With wind, sun, and limited rainfall in the forecast, it’s a good time to think about how we use water around the house and yard.
Even though our utility system is flat-rate, using water wisely supports the whole community. It helps reduce strain on local infrastructure, protects natural areas, and contributes to fire safety during dry spells.
Here are a few simple ways to reduce water use at home:
In the Yard:
-
Water early or late. Wind and heat can cause water to evaporate quickly. Watering in the early morning or evening helps it soak in where plants need it most.
-
Keep it targeted. Use hoses or sprinklers that water your plants—not your sidewalk or driveway.
-
Let your grass grow. Longer grass holds moisture better and protects soil from drying out.
-
Choose native plants. Local species are better suited to our climate and usually need less water. Check out our Wildflowers of the Crowsnest Pass page for ideas.
Inside the Home:
-
Fix leaks quickly. Even small drips can add up over time.
-
Turn off the tap. Don’t leave water running while brushing teeth or washing dishes.
-
Use full loads. Wait until your dishwasher or washing machine is full before running a cycle.
-
Keep showers short. A few minutes less makes a difference over time.
Small actions add up. Being mindful with water helps protect this essential resource—now and for the long term. Have questions? Contact the municipal office at 403-562-8833.
