The MDP - A Plan for the Future: Shaped by the Community, for the Community

At the heart of every strong community is a shared vision—and a plan to bring that vision to life. In Crowsnest Pass, our Municipal Development Plan (MDP) lays the foundation for thoughtful, sustainable growth that reflects the voices and values of our residents.

Here’s a look at the guiding framework behind the MDP.

1. It All Starts with a Vision

“The Crowsnest Pass is a unique mountain community that provides a diverse mix of housing options, dynamic downtowns, a thriving economy, and unmatched recreation opportunity.”

This vision guides the direction of all planning and development decisions, ensuring that future changes enhance—not compromise—what makes Crowsnest Pass special.

2. Guided by Shared Values

To stay on course, we follow a clear set of values that keep decision-making grounded and accountable:

  • Many Communities, One Municipality
We respect the distinct identities of each of our communities while working toward a unified future.
  • Honesty and Follow-Through
Transparent communication with stakeholders is key. We commit to decisions, act on them, and report back.
  • Responsible and Resilient
We focus on long-term outcomes and responsible use of resources—always with an eye on building a resilient future.

3. A Strategy for Sustainable Growth

The MDP outlines four strategic pillars to guide how and where our community grows:

Focus and Intensify Urban Development
We encourage new development within existing built-up areas to make the most of existing infrastructure, support vibrant community life, and strengthen local businesses.

Protect Treasured Landscapes
Sensitive natural areas are a defining feature of Crowsnest Pass. Our plan focuses development away from these wild spaces to protect wildlife habitats and maintain access to natural experiences.

Diversify and Strengthen the Economy
We aim to become a premier tourism destination in Alberta—while also supporting resource-based industries and the businesses and housing that sustain local workers.

Increase Housing Options
From family homes to aging-in-place options, we’re working to ensure a mix of housing that reflects our changing demographics and welcomes new residents into our community.

This is just the beginning.

Next week, we’ll explore the specific goals that are shaping our communities—and the tools we’re using to make them a reality.
