BIKING & HIKING & WALKING TRAILS

There are many mining, forestry and bush trails. The country north and south of Highway 3 is accessed by a spider's web of roads that vary from good gravel to passable four wheel drive surfaces.

The Kananaskis Road and Atlas Haul Road lead north from Coleman and provide access to the scenic and challenging rides and bike 'n hikes of the High Rock Range and the upper Oldman River and the Carbondale and Castle valleys can be reached via the Adanac Road, Sartoris Road via Highway #507.

Back Country/Trails - There are countless roads and trails throughout the area. The York Creek area is popular; high in the mountains is the wreckage of a RCAF Dakota aircraft which crashed in 1946. The road to Ironstone Lookout station, south of Coleman, is a steep climb rewarded with views of the Crowsnest Valley.

Star Creek Falls - To reach the trail head, drive to the end of Willow Drive in West Coleman. Turn left on a gravel road which ends at the creek. The unmarked trail is to the right beside Star Creek.

Window Mountain Lake - Approximately 3 kms of a very steep, winding trail begins about 8 kms up the Atlas Forestry road. The lake can be fished. Window Mountain is so named because of the large hole right through the rock wall. The mountain can be climbed by experienced climbers.

Miner's Path - The short trail along Nez Perce Creek begins at Flumerfelt park in Coleman. This park has tennis courts and picnic tables. The first part of the trail is over the route once used by miners to reach the McGillvray Mine. The trail ends at a waterfall - a rough trail ends at a waterfall - a rough trail continues up to the former Coleman reservoir. Walk time is about 20 minutes to complete a 1.5 km loop, continue up the right (east) bank at the waterfall, cross the creek upstream, at an old dam site and return along the west side of the creek until you reach the steps leading back to the creek and the previously completed portion of the trail.

Lions Club Path - The trail beside the Crowsnest River begins at the Cedar Riverside Inn and ends at Blairmore east access. Walk Time is about 20 minutes.
Sulphur Springs - A short walk across the railroad tracks at Frank ends at a cold spring. The water was once piped to a three-story sanatorium sited where the Turtle Mountain Motor Hotel stands.

Chinook Lake and Deadmans Pass - A lake-side trail takes about 30 minutes to complete; Deadman's pass is a longer hike which exits in B.C. The area has marked cross-country ski trails which offer scenic walks and bicycle rides.
